Understanding Call Numbers

What is the purpose of call numbers?

Each book in the library has a unique call number. A call number is like an address: it tells us where the book is located in the library.

Call numbers appear on the spines of books and in the online catalog

Note that the same call number can be written from top-to-bottom, or left-to-right.

The Mitchell College Library uses Library of Congress Classification for call numbers. This system uses a combination of letters and numbers to arrange materials by subjects.

In the Library Catalog, you can also find the location of an item and its availability.

Browsing in the LC Collection

The Library of Congress Classification system arranges materials by subject, making it easy to browse and find materials on a given topic. The first sections of the call number represent the subject. The letter-and-decimal section of the call number often represents the author's last name. The last section of a call number is often the date of publication.

For example:

Title: The guide to learning and study skills: for higher education and at work

Author: Drew, Sue

Call Number: LB2395 .D739 2010
