MU201 & 202: History and Appreciation of Music

Recommended Search Terminology

The following search terminology (offered by way of example, and by no means an exhaustive list) may be used in searching any library catalog or database for music resources.  Note that in some cases a subject search is recommended.  In these cases, you may want to try both subject and keysword searching to better understand the difference between the two strategies:

  • Baroque music
  • Chamber music
  • Classical music
  • Early music
  • Medieval music
  • Music - History and criticism (subject search recommended)
  • Renaissance music
  • Romanticism in music
  • Opera (subject search recommended)
  • Symphonies (subject search recommended)
  • Vocal music (subject search recommended)

Hopefully, this will give you a satisfactory start!

Library Reference Resources

All of the titles listed below are located in the Library's Reference Collection on the main level.  Note the Call Numbers, which all begin with the alphabetic designation ML. ML is the Library of Congress classification code for literature on music.  Consider browsing the shelves in the ML's, both within the Reference Collection and within the circulating collection located on the lower level of the Library.
