Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

Teaching and learning resources for faculty.

Accessibility Basics

Creating accessible resources ensures that students of all abilities and using a variety of technology tools are able to access the information you are delivering in modalities compatible with their abilities.

Ensuring your resources are accessible is key to universal design - when resources are accessible to those with disabilities, they are accessible to all.

Examples of accessible resources include:

  • Video with closed captioning, subtitles, or descriptive audio
  • Digital images with alt text
  • Websites that follow web content accessibility guidelines
  • Documents with consistent and minimal formatting

Students use a variety of accessibility tools including:

  • Screen reading software
  • Voice to text software
  • Text to speech software
  • Screen magnifiers
